Research Institute

In 2001, when Professor Lynda Gratton of the London Business School became a Fellow of the Advanced Institute of Management (AIM) and was awarded a government grant of the order of £900,000 to study performance and innovation in contemporary firms, she and her research team collected data from over 150 teams in Europe and the USA.

This was the origin of the Hot Spots Research Institute.

An overview of the research is contained in Lynda's latest book Hot Spots - Why Some Teams, Workplaces and Organisations Buzz with Energy - and Others Don't.

In 2009, we finalised another research project, this time in partnership with the Singaporean Ministry of Manpower. In 2008, the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) began working with Professor Lynda Gratton and Andreas Voigt from the Hot Spots Research Institute to rapidly accelerate the understanding within the country of how future innovation challenges can be met. The aim of the research project was to find out how teams and communities can be supported to learn rapidly, boost their performance and deliver at speed.

Future of Work Phase 2

We are now in phase two of the Future of Work (FOW) Consortium, with 43 member organisations.

Our goal for this phase is deepening the research and developing  future of work experts who will be able to take organisations forward. We will focus on taking action round the four most crucial themes that emerged:

  1. How do executives support the development of a talent pool and leadership cadre which is ‘future proofed’?
  2. What are the means by which organisations can build and support the communities, networks and ecosystems which are so crucial for the future?
  3. How do we craft the teams and collaborative working in a world which is increasingly virtual?
  4. What are the implications for those functions and groups tasked with delivering the future of work – in particular the learning, organisational development and human resource functions?

The Future of Work Consortium is a worldwide community looking at a significant contemporary challenge, what work will look like in 2020.

In a co-creation mode, we have brought together a diverse group of phenomenally interesting professionals from a wide range of organisations, across the world and industry sectors. Together we are forecasting what the future of work will look like, and how organisations need to adapt their work practices to remain relevant and successful.

Thanks to a technologically sophisticated communications platform, combined with face to face and telephone we are able to engage a significant number of executives, ranging from very senior to Gen Ys, in a free yet outcomes focused discussion.

This is a completely new way of conducting research and dealing with important issues that will have profound implications for businesses and organisations in general.
